Marie-Klaire Farrugia is a Consultant Paediatric Urologist in Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, specialising in kidney, bladder and genital anomalies that babies are born with or develop later in childhood. Miss Farrugia specialises in prenatally-diagnosed urinary tract conditions and their postnatal investigation and management, and is experienced in counselling pregnant mothers wanting advice and reassurance. She is experienced in all areas of paediatric urology including urinary tract infections, kidney obstruction or reflux, wetting, foreskin and testicular issues and hypospadias. She is a keen minimally-invasive surgeon and amongst the first paediatric robotic urologists in the country.
Miss Farrugia obtained her medical degree from the University of Malta and subsequently completed an accredited paediatric surgical and urological training programme in the U.K., working in leading children’s surgical centres including Great Ormond Street Hospital, St George’s Hospital, Kings College Hospital and the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Miss Farrugia became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Paediatric Surgery in 2008. She also spent two-years in full-time research at the Institute of Child Health in Great Ormond Street Hospital, studying prenatally-diagnosed bladder conditions and how they affect kidney and bladder development in childhood. Her work led to a number of peer-reviewed publications and the award of a research MD from the University of London.
Miss Farrugia went on to achieve a sub-specialty certificate in Paediatric Urology in 2011. Her research work on the congenital megaureter led to the award of a joint European Society of Pediatric Urology and American Academy of Pediatrics travelling fellowship to expert children’s hospitals in Boston, Baltimore and San Francisco. She went on to publish the first British Association of Paediatric Urologists Consensus statement on the management of the congenital megaureter, and has presented her work at a number of international conferences. She is an expert reviewer for the leading paediatric urology journals.
Miss Farrugia became a Consultant in Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, London, in 2011 and continued to develop her clinical and research interest in perinatal urology by devising prenatal hydronephrosis guidelines for the northwest London hospital network, ensuring a smoother transition for mothers and babies with kidney issues following delivery. She runs prenatal counselling clinics in Chelsea and Westminster and Queen Charlotte’s Hospitals, in addition to paediatric urology clinics in both hospitals. She is the clinical lead for the North West London Paediartic Surgical Network.
Miss Farrugia is actively involved with the children’s paediatric robotic charity the Pluto Appeal (www.theplutoappeal.com), and has raised over £35,000 for the charity. She is keen on fitness training and travelling and keeps very active!
