Dr Adelaida Martinez qualified as a doctor in Colombian, South America and spent 18 months as a houseman in Lesotho, South Africa where she learnt to love children and decided to be a paediatric neurologist.
She spent four years at Great Ormond Street Hospital, working under Dr John Wilson. In 1986, she returned to Colombia where she worked for four years as a Junior Instructor for the National and Rosario Universities and seven years at the Fundacion Santa Fe de Bogota (the most modern and best equipped medical institution in the Capital). Her return to the UK happened by chance when she was offered a locum post at Dr Wilson’s retirement party in November 1996. While in the UK, she applied for her current position at Bart’s Health NHS Trust where she has been working since 1997.
Dr Martinez has travelled to the Emirates and Kuwait to see children with neurological problems many times and routinely sees children from all over the world in her NHS and private practice. She speaks several languages and is trying hard to learn more Arabic.
