Surgery

The Children’s Hospital attracts surgeons with many different specialist skills and experience of complex cancer surgery.

Surgeons specialising in cancer are attracted to the Children’s Hospital from leading London NHS hospitals, including Great Ormond Street, The Royal Marsden and Chelsea & Westminster. Your child usually will be able to see a leading expert with particular experience of the type of cancer they have.

We have 15 individual patient rooms, with accommodation for one parent to stay overnight.

Our aim is to create an environment where children and their families feel happy and relaxed, and where you as parents can be confident that your child is receiving the very best medical care and attention.

After surgery, your child may be transferred to the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) if required, you would be informed prior to the surgery, and an opportunity to visit the unit can be arranged. There are times that following surgery a child is moved to ICU even though it was not planned, this will be explained fully and you will have the opportunity to support your child whilst admitted to the unit. Alternatively your child will be moved to the dedicated paediatric ward, where they are cared for by registered children’s nurses, supported by a multi-disciplinary team of physiotherapists, dieticians, pharmacists, psychologists, play specialists and, if necessary, interpreters.
