A multi-disciplinary approach
Although your child will be placed in the care of one particular consultant, at the Children’s Hospital we use a ‘multi-disciplinary’ team (MDT) approach. This means that staff with different skills work together and meet regularly to discuss your child’s condition and treatment to ensure that they have the very best care. A number of MDTs cover the various specialities offered.
This way of working means you are likely to meet many healthcare professionals who are all dedicated to helping your child. These include:
- Resident Medical Officers (RMOs)
- Nurses (including clinical nurse specialists)
- Play specialists
- Art therapists
The psychologists and play specialists support both inpatients and outpatients, helping children and their families adjust to coming into hospital, their illness and treatment, and overcome any anxieties. Specialised play can help your child understand more about their condition and treatment as well as preparing them for procedures. It can also help distract them, reducing feelings of anxiety while gaining their confidence and cooperation. Our play specialists are also able to assess and support any child with developmental, psychological, emotional or behavioural problems.
